A Response To “Turkey Reveals Support for Libyan Rebels”

February 29, 2012 on 3:17 am | By | In Business

In 2004, Qaddafi turned over his nuclear weapons program (burning Pakistan as the country supplying him with materials and assistance) and arrived at a settlement of Pan AM 103, ending an economic embargo in place for almost 20 years. With the Soviet Union gone, Libya turned away from Russia and began extensive economic ties with the West.

If you go down the list of major projects started since then – high power electric lines serving something like 98% of the population, desalinization plants, the completion of the Great Manmade River, new power plants, a steel plant in Misurata…. pretty much everyone was doing business in Libya…. China, South Korea, Spain, Turkey….. BP is developing an offshore oil field. Russia has a contract to build a railroad to ultimately connect Egypt to Morocco, but little has happened so far.

Libya was a major employer of labor from Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and subsaharan Africa. The Iraq military started ordering new armaments from western countries instead of Russia, but was not building up a big military. Most of the weapons being used are Soviet era (pre 1990) weapons.

Ghadaffi being a hardcore Soviet era Socialist (not name calling – just a fact) was a secular leader. You’ll be hard pressed to find pictures of him in a mosque or seeking dating advice for men from a Muslim cleric. That’s about to change.

My View On “Long”

February 28, 2012 on 7:03 pm | By | In Business

Fifteen years ago a month prior to my 59th birthday I lost my job. Average monthly filings for Unemployment insurance ran about 375K some what similar to what we have seen over the last two or three months. It seemed impossible to find a job, any job. Age played a significant role. After some research I started a small business advice niche business related to waste disposal business. Many banks turned down my application for a business loan and told me the business model was flawed. The experience tells me government programs must be available to help at times like this. Stimulus programs yes. I believe Obama has it right. We need to elect a congress that will support our President as well as re-elect him. By the way the business succeeded and I am still in business today at age 74. Crookedwood

Views On “Police Hunt Down Escaped Wild Animals From Zanesville, Ohio, Preserve”

February 28, 2012 on 8:53 am | By | In Business

Michele, I agree I should not have used “all”.

Never the less think about the human impact, especially with the notion that these advice animals are here to serve us. Think! What if you were “awaken” to be shot from a quarter mile upwind by some smelly red-neck? Disgust! Palin — worse.

They say – the world’s human population will peak at 9-10 billion. This economic crisis is not helping. All these f@rts want nice houses and huge yards. Example: look at any coastline around the world, for animal’s non-access to the water.

All these people want babies, houses, jobs and cars! Give the animals a break!

Analysis On “The Long Search for Full”

February 28, 2012 on 7:32 am | By | In Business

This article hints at something important. It’s easier to find a job when you have a job. This article is saying that in a subtle way (The further you get away from employment law advice, the harder it gets). So to stay ahead of things, how secure is your job? Look for signals of how secure your job is. Where is the income coming from that pays your salary in gov’t or private? If your boss was asked to layoff x% of his/her dept., where would you be on the list? If your job starts to look flaky, look while you still have one. And if you do get laid off some of the better companies give you a few months where you still have a company address before you have to leave. Look like crazy during that interim time. I was in this position once and wasted the time thinking I could stay with the company. When a 10/20% RIF happens, it’s musical chairs and all reqs at your company will disappear fast. It does seem like the employment picture has changed for the worse. At the end of the Clinton administration (I’m not saying Clinton had some profound economic insight, he was probably just lucky) the country was swimming in jobs and people made fun of having a 9 to 5 job. But people moved down Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and wouldn’t elect Clinton’s chosen successor, even though now they would give their eye teeth to have the 2000 employment picture.

Analysis On “Fran Tarkenton: Does God Care Who Wins Football Games?”

February 27, 2012 on 7:17 pm | By | In Business

Thanks for a great article Mr. Tarkenton. God cares about everything! But He uses everything to point people to Himself – whether it is in winning or losing, sickness or miracle cure, riches or rags – all things have their place in pointing people to Him. And that is the point of Tim Tebow. He wants people to think about and draw near to the God he loves so much and God will use him to do that. Whether that means he wins or loses and right now it appears to be more in the win advice column.

Tim Tebow is a blessing to his team, his sport, his country and our God. Good for him!!!

Analysis On “Cut the Law Firms, Keep the Lawyers”

February 26, 2012 on 11:17 am | By | In Business

It’s not the practitioners about which I complain so much (although it is fair to complain about them too), it is the self serving nature of the system as a whole; you know, create a need and fill it? Regulation is generally by self, and even when not only by peer or legislatures (also brothers of the bar…). Now if we had Doctors overseeing free lawyer advices ethics; now that might mean something. (Lawyers already oversee doctors using lawsuits)

Oh, and your implicit equivalence of doctors and lawyers is insulting to Doctors (and I know a lot of them…) It may be true that Doctors could do lawyer’s work, but I seriously doubt it would work the other way around. I can just see some lawyer trying to memorize the Krebbs citric acid cycle…

My View On “Vietnam Plans Live”

February 25, 2012 on 3:20 pm | By | In Business

Vietnam is backed by Russia and Phillipines is backed by USA. Who backs China? Without backing of a major power, China has no assurance to win a war with even the minor neighbor. This is no fault of Deng and the present leaders in China, as it is a legacy of Mao, who backed Vietcom to fight for unification, while sending all of their ingenious scientists to hard labor instead of developing high-end navy/air techs, wasting half a century precious window period of peace for catching up. However, as a peace-loving person, I’d like to teen advice Vietnam leaders not to bully China too much. Give them some face, that’s good for everybody.

Analysis On “House GOP Leaders Release Plan for Deeper Cuts”

February 25, 2012 on 7:06 am | By | In Business

This is going to come down to a fight over the Debt Ceiling. The House Republicans must pass legislation restricting the measures President Obama may take, in the event that the debt management advice ceiling is not raised (due to intransigence on the part of the President over budget cuts). This legislation would require the Treasury to prioritize whatever measures are necessary to prevent default on outstanding debt, and protect funding for vital services as specifically enumerated in the legislation.

If they do not take this step, the President might well (at his own discretion) allow an economic emergency to begin evolving, which he would, of course, blame on the Republicans. Absent a bill clearly articulating the intent of Congress as to how to manage a stalemate over the Debt Ceiling, Mr. Obama will very likely be able to justify near dictatorial authority over the management of the ensuing economic crisis. If anyone in this forum has the ear of Speaker Boehner, or the Republican leadership in Congress, I hope they would at least raise this issue, and suggest that they give it serious consideration. (I have, of course, attempted to raise it myself by e-mails and phone calls to various members of Congress, but to no avail.)

Some Thoughts On “You Need a Plan to Boost Retirement Income”

February 24, 2012 on 2:40 pm | By | In Business

The authors talk about CD ladders based on $50,000, implying their cv advice is for people with 100′s of thousands in their savings accounts as opposed to millions. In that circumstance, muni bonds are likely not a good idea. First (and I’ve seen many people make this mistake), muni bonds or muni bond funds should never be in a tax deferred account (e.g. IRA, 401K). Second, muni bonds in a taxable account only make sense for people in the highest tax brackets. If someone has even $500K in total savings and it generates $25K in taxable income (income from taxable accounts plus the MRD and other withdrawals from IRAs), they likely will not be in a very high tax bracket. Muni bonds rarely make sense in that situation; they would likely be much better off in taxable high quality corporate bonds.

Importance of Having a US Mailing Address

February 24, 2012 on 11:40 am | By | In Business

If you’re the type of person who frequently travels to the US, then having a US mailing address is beneficial. For one, you can sign on promos online and have the items delivered at your mailing address. Second, you can just pick up items delivered to this mailing address after returning from a trip. Third, you can protect yourself from salespeople who keep sending you promotional materials. Instead of getting junk mail at your residence address, forward all correspondence to this mailing address. You can easily filter items or mail that you really want to receive; hence, making this a very good option.
