Crowds flowed in and out of the square like a rolling sea, and Vectis felt utterly alone.    A door opened in the stone building—the same door he had entered that rainy afternoon.  He passed through the outer room with its fresco of nymphs, down a hall, and into a chamber where the legate and three other officers waited.  In the corner sat Jupiter.    The legate motioned to a couch at the center of the room.  “Well, Vectis Trebellius Registry Repair,” he began stiffly, glancing at a slate in front of him, “we have been discussing your unusual experiences in the desert.  The other commander complains you exceeded the stated purpose of the exercise and endangered the lives of Roman soldiers.
