The Virgin Medi Corporations Plans to Provide Broadband that is 40 times faster
August 31, 2008 on 11:12 am | By admin | In Technology | No CommentsThe broadband market has slowed downover the years as homeowners try to resist the high cost. There have been attempts made to curb spending on current broadband, and to look for better broadband options at a lower cost. Broadband with a much faster speed will definitely be a good boost for the residential broadband market.
BT, Virgin’s bitter rival, has been making major improvements to its network. With spending of about £1.5bn, they will be able to provide 40mb to 60mb per second to its customers. Their goal is to have this up and running on time for the London Olympic, and their network could support 10m homes. For Virgin Media to compete with BT or take the lead, they must themselves make a definite and major change that will increase their broadband speed. Virgin Media plan to provide its customers 200mb per second of broadband speed by the year 2012. According to Neil Berkett, the company’s chief executive, this will make their service 40 times faster that what Briton surfers currently enjoy.
Unfortunately, Virgin Media had a total loss of 19,500 customers in three months, even though they still generated a profit. To keep pace, Virgin Mobile decided to launch its 50 mb per second broadband, leaving BT way behind. BT are expecting to have 40mb by 2012, whereas Virgin Media expects to deliver up to 200mb by that time. To make way for this Virgin Media is also slowly eliminating its analogue TV service over a 24 month period. This will definitely open the possibilities for higher capacity and increased speeds. The current trends indicate that Virgin Media is in the lead in the UK, and probably will be providing service that is faster that what is available even in Japan or Korea.
